TAKE A WALK THROUGH 'NEVER REACHING THE HORIZON' - HARRY OUSEY'S ABSTRACTED LANDSCAPES
Harry Ousey (1915 – 1985), a prolific post-war modernist artist, lived a life devoted to capturing abstract landscapes in his gestural style.
A bohemian drifter, Ousey eluded broad recognition, although many figures in the art world recognised his significance. Later exposure of his art by his niece, Sue Astles, has elevated his body of work, with pieces held in prestigious collections across the country.
Explore the life and works of Ousey as he roamed the landscapes of Cornwall, Derbyshire, Italy and France, where Ousey’s story came to an end with his ashes scattered at the foot of Mont Sainte-Victoire in 1985.

Harry's Legacy
After Harry’s death, Susie, Harry’s wife, brought as much work as she could back to England. It remained, untouched, in the attic of her home until her death in 1997, when his body of work was left to Harry’s niece, Sue Astles.
Sue, alongside her husband Ron, has worked tirelessly to bring Harry’s work back into the light to great success, as is recognised by this exhibition at the Cooper Gallery. Harry’s works can be found in public collections across the country - the Falmouth Art Gallery, the Salford Museum and Art Gallery and the Whitworth Art Gallery, which recently included Harry’s work in the Ruskin Retrospective alongside the likes of Turner and Nash.
With Harry Ousey's position in art history assured, Sue would like others to enjoy Harry's legacy through sale of selected works from this exhibition. See the works that are for sale in the exhibition catalogue below. Please contact the Cooper Gallery to organise purchase and payment!
In the last few years, Sue has worked closely with Simon, Suzanne and Eve Bridges at Elephantstones Gallery in Hayfield Village to create a new home for Harry’s work. Elephantstones are the curators of this exhibition.
“Curating this Harry Ousey exhibition is akin to taking a walk in familiar hills with a visitor to share a wonderful vantage point for the first time”
- Simon Bridges, Elephantstones Gallery.
