HARRY OUSEY AT THE WHITWORTH ART GALLERY, MANCHESTER

TODAY WE VISITED HARRY OUSEY’S PIECE HANGING IN THE WHITWORTH ART GALLERY AS PART OF THE John Ruskin EXHIBITION.

β€˜Art is not a competitive sport. Comparing the merits of one work or artist to another is only for the brave. I would, however, venture this - seeing Harry’s work, painted in 1972, at Birdlip in the Costwolds, sit so, so easily amongst such luminous company was thrilling. Sir Edward John Poynter, JMW Turner, Paul Nash - great works spanning centuries with Harry Ousey amongst them. Harry’s work has been recognised as substantial by many and, whilst his profile is much less well known, his inclusion in this exhibition is testament to the continuing relevance and worth of his body of work.’ - Simon Bridges

tHE EXHIBITION

β€˜Joy For Ever: How to use art to change the world and its price in the market’

This exhibition responds to the 200th birthday of artist, art critic and social reformer John Ruskin with a joyful look at how to use art for social change.

A word from harry’s niece

β€˜In a diary, Harry Ousey writes of seeing two paintings when he was a child which β€œreally captured my imagination”, by Constable and J. M.W. Turner giving him much inspiration.

What would Harry have to say now having a watercolour next to a Turner at the Whitworth?!’

JUST A CARD!

The JUST A CARD campaign aims to encourage people to buy from Designer/Makers and Independent Galleries and Shops by reinforcing the message that all purchases, however small, even 'just a card' are so vital to the prosperity and survival of small businesses.

Here at Elephantstones, we support local artists and only sell ethically sourced gifts. This movement is fantastic for small galleries like us.

So dont forget, next time you pop into your local small gallery… just a card.. helps! :)

IRONWORK BY RAIF BRENNAND

Β

IRONWORK Made Locally

We have a selection of ironwork from door knockers to fire pokers!

Hayfield born, Raif worked at a primary school before a change of direction saw him spend six years in a scrap yard. Here he picked up welding and metal working skills and a dislike for waste.

Raif built a forge from scrap car parts, which he now uses to create his ironwork from waste metal. His materials and kit may be unconventional but his craft is timeless and he uses traditional methods to make his work, coating his finished pieces with beeswax to slow the rusting process.
